MADIS Provider Resources
Overview
The demands for finer scale meteorological services have increasingly required higher resolution observations to initialize and evaluate weather and climate models, applications, and products. MADIS partnerships with international agencies; federal, state, and local agencies (e.g. state Departments of Transportation); universities; volunteer networks; and private sector (e.g. airlines, railroads) providers have added over 66,000 surface stations from over 160 non-NOAA surface networks to NOAA's surface observations. These partnerships are helping to improve National Weather Service's (NWS) Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) and forecasting services as well as providing a service to the providers.
MADIS provides the following services for providers:
- Quality Control and statistics
- Global database of spatially and temporally integrated observations.
- Standardized access to the Global database.
- Notification if network is not reporting.
Become a Provider
- Are you a Citizen that wants to send personal station data to MADIS/NOAA? If so, please become a provider through CWOP.
- Do you have hydrometeorological data that you would like to send to MADIS/NOAA? If so, please follow our Hydrological Surface data requirements below to become a provider.
- Do you have another form of data that is not hydrometeorological that you would like to send to MADIS/NOAA? If so, please become a provider through our All Other Environmental Data Type requirements.

ENCLOSURE The NWS is requesting each data partner to create a file containing their sites and their associated National Weather Service Location Identifiers (NWSLIs) with the data values encoded in SHEF in the .E format. The data partner will send the SHEF-encoded file to a central server operated by the NWS. The data partner will send these types of SHEF files: 1.1.1.
